Genre
What is it?
Genre is a way of classifying the general subject of any publication, from book, to film. For example Horror. However, Genre is an extremley general way to define any product, for example 'Nightmare on Elm Street' and 'Saw' are two very different movies, The first being a super natural film about a man who kills people using their nightmares,
the second is about two men trapped in a room at the mercy of an unseen killer called jigsaw who machines to kill people.
Yet both are classified as horror. What is then done is they are put into sub genres, a genre within a genre, which separates the two, Nightmare on Elms street is put into slasher films, due to his tendency to cut people up. Or they will be put into two genres, like Saw, which is put into mystery, due to the interest around who the killer is, and horror, due to the horrific things people are put through in the movie.
